Technical English Course
(English is the Language of International Communication)
Objectives of teaching English
The present course highlights the importance of the English language in the career of the students of engineering both in global and local contexts. Indeed, its main objective is to explore the impact of English language on the career of the students of engineering. The published language literature review reveals the fact that the English language is the most essential language for the students of engineering in the local context but it is equally relevant in the global context as well. It suggests that there is widespread application of English language in the fields of engineering, science and research.
Proficiency in English is very important for students of Engineering and other professional courses because it’s the medium of instruction in all higher academics and it is widely used as the medium of communication in the different fields of research throughout the world. English is also the predominant language for international commerce, trade, international relations, tourism, science, technological research, and education. Engineering students have to use English to deal comprehensively with the countless lectures conducted in English, comprehend countless sentences and paragraphs written in English in the engineering textbooks and reference books, tutorials, projects and dissertation papers. Academic success therefore is predominantly dependent on English language proficiency of the students. Besides that the world is increasingly becoming a small place and job opportunities are not just limited to particular country, although people may have completed their education in it. Mastering communicative competence in English, therefore, is important for the engineering students in Algeria, not only for their academic career but also for their prospective professional life. With this background it is pertinent to explore the status of English language proficiency levels and communication skills of engineers graduating from Algerian engineering schools.

Remark: Students are requested to prepare a report taking into consideration the following points:
1. Parts of speech (how many parts of speech, how are they defined, how are they used etc…)
2. Engineering materials
3. Engineering characteristics of materials (chemical, mineralogical, physical, thermal, hydraulics, mechanical properties)
